UAM Elite Eight

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello Department of Athletics looks back on its top storylines and accomplishments from the 2016-17 sports season with the Fourth Annual UAM Sports Elite Eight countdown.

The series will start on Monday, June 5 with the number 8 headline and will run through the end of June with new releases on each Monday and Thursday of the month. The number one overall storyline will be revealed on June 29.

Below are the headlines that did not make the top eight, but are worthy of recognition. The honorable mention selections are listed in order of occurrence.

SEARS SETS UAM FOOTBALL RECORD IN OPENING GAME: Sophomore quarterback Cole Sears opened up the 2016 season by recording 533 total passing yards to break the Arkansas-Monticello record for most passing yards in a single game. Sears went on to total six passing touchdowns in the match-up as well, which tied the Weevil single-game record also.

ANGELA RAMOS TOP UAM WOMEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNER: Freshman Angela Ramos finished as UAM Cross Country's top finisher throughout the season, leading the Blossoms in all five events during the fall.

VOLLEYBALL FINISHES WITH SECOND MOST CONFERENCE WINS: UAM Volleyball totaled eight Great American Conference victories on the year, which is the second most conference wins in school history. The Blossoms earned a seven seed in the GAC Tournament as well, and complied a 12-17 overall record.

GASPARINI, UAM VOLLEYBALL BREAKS MULTIPLE RECORDS: Senior Carolina Gasparini capped off her final season by setting the UAM Volleyball record for service aces per set in a career, service aces per set in a season, and total service aces in a season. The Blossoms also set a team single-season record in attack percentage, finishing the year hitting .202 overall.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BEATS HSU WITH LAST SECOND SHOT: UAM Women's Basketball took down GAC opponent Henderson State on the road by a final score of 70-68, as Treasure Evans knocked down a mid-range jumper with just under three seconds remaining for the win.

HARVEY BECOMES UAM BASEBALL'S ALL-TIME WINS LEADER:  UAM Head Baseball Coach John Harvey earned win number 161 with Weevils Baseball in the first win of the 2017 season against Ouachita on the road. Coach Harvey finished the season with 193 total career victories with Arkansas-Monticello as well.

UAM CHEER TAKES SECOND AT CHEERSPORT NATIONALS:  The Arkansas-Monticello Cheerleading team finished in second place overall at the 2017 CheerSport Cheerleading Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, and was the biggest competition UAM Cheer has been a part of with over 800 teams participating at various levels at the event.

WITMER LEADS UAM GOLF MEN AT NATURAL STATE CLASSIC: Senior golfer Bryan Witmer led the Weevils to a fifth overall team finish in the Natural State Classic in Heber Springs, Arkansas, with Witmer placing in a tie for second overall in the event with a two round score of 71, 71.

JOHNSON, RYDBERG EARN ALL-GAC HONORS: Junior Frida Rydberg, and senior Lauren Johnson of UAM Golf each earned All-Great American Conference honors this past season for the third straight year, as Rydberg earned an honorable mention selection, and Johnson notched a second-team pick.
